Would you have held your nerve?
Let's start from the very beginning, now to some of you; the 18th of February might have just been another cold and wet day. However, for me, it was the day that a big penny dropped, that had I not held my nerve, and battled against my instincts, I could well have cost myself almost £450!
It's important for me to give you a bit of background first and foremost. Basically, it was Tuesday, raining and I was bored, and thought; hmmm let's try a punt on the midweek fixtures. I logged in to my William Hill account, where I saw a nice sum of £30, and my thumbs began to itch. I first of all searched out Barcelona, who were set to play Man City at the Etihad, and given how Barcelona have been on top form in the past three out of four games, they seemed an obvious choice. So, selected them, got odds of 7/5, so now who else would I choose?
After a bit of searching, the next game, which for some reason seemed to scream out at me, was Arsenal vs Bayern Munich, now while Arsenal are sitting at the top in the Premier league, something told me Bayern would come out on top. In fact, a quick scout on the BBC Sport shows that they had won seven out of seven of their previous matches, so Bayern to win it was at odds of 3/4 !
Now, the next one, I can't really say why I chose them, I just did, and it was for Wigan to beat Barnsley at odds of 8/15, in the Championship. It was quickly decided, I was to go for a five fold multiple bet, so I needed two more games!
No faffing about, I chose Leyton Orient to beat Stevenage in the League one fixture at odds of 8/11. Then lastly, based on previous form and high score tallies, I backed Paris Saint Germain to beat Bayer Leverkusen at odds of 6/5.
I kept the stake rounded and the bet type simple, placing a fivefold multiple bet of £30, giving me a potential pay out of £734.16 should I fall lucky.
The bet was placed, I was happy, and now the rain had stopped, so with not all my boredom satisfied, I headed to the pub. After a beer or seven, I headed home, slumped in the comfort of my favorite chair at around 9:50pm, knowing four of five had been played I logged into Hills on my phone, through sheer laziness of not wanting to boot the laptop up, I couldn’t quite believe what I saw upon clicking the "My Bets" section. Barcelona, Paris Saint Germain, Wigan and Leyton Orient had all won. This left just one game, which was the Arsenal vs Bayern Munich match, to be played the next day. In the mean time I was offered potential cash out, of £284.38, which would have given me a net profit of £254.48, easy money. However, Bayern was the one that I was convinced about, almost certain that Arsenal couldn't get the better of them. For three hours, I was as close to cashing in the bet early, as close gets. The thoughts in my head became much like a devil and angel on each shoulder "Go on cash in, £254 guaranteed" versus "No, hold it out, just think if you cash in, and Bayern win, you'll lose out on an extra £450". After much deliberation, I opted to let it ride, however all day Wednesday I purposely avoided logging in to the account, and made no effort to check the score, until 10pm on Wednesday night that is. I must apologise to fans of the gunners, but all my thoughts and prayers were for them to lose, and lose hard! I felt sick with anticipation, had I lost everything and thrown away a £30 stake and a £254 profit, or had I got lucky and won big!
I checked the result, and literally could not believe my eyes, Kroos had hit one home in the 54th minute, and a second one hit the net near the final whistle, with Muller scoring in the 88th minute. The game was over, Arsenal had lost, Bayern had won, and the result was 2-0 to Bayern. I literally couldn't believe my luck, and immediately I logged into William Hill, and low and behold, there was a total of £734.16 sat there.
For once, I went against all my natural instincts, I am not a greedy person usually, but something told me to hold out and see it through. Now you may have noticed, we've written guides on the cash out feature, not for the sake of it, but because we think it's great, however this time, I held my nerve right up to the end, the question is, would you have done the same? Would you have cashed out? The fact is, if you would of, and if I had, I'd have cost myself £450 in extra cash. It's safe to say that betting on sport keeps us on the edge of our seats!
A final pointer is, if I can win big, so too can you! My tip would be, do a bit of research, and make carefully considered bets, and you too can win big! In the meantime, I'm off back to the pub to celebrate*!
